Cemetery visitation hours are from sunrise to sunset. Visitors must enter/exit only through designated gates.
History
Since 1980, the Village of Newtown owns and maintains Flagg Spring Cemetery, formerly managed by the Odd Fellows Lodge. Flagg Spring Cemetery has graves dating back to the early 19th Century. Many of those buried were the first settlers in this area who founded Newtown, formerly known as Mercersburg.
Operation
The cemetery is operated in accordance with the laws of the State of Ohio and in accordance with the appropriate principles of good conduct which the Cemetery Committee and Board of Trustees believe should govern the operation of the cemetery.

Visitation
- Pet animals are not permitted in the cemetery unless they remain confined within the owner's vehicle. The only exceptions to this rue are animals used to assist visually or hearing impaired persons.
- No one is permitted to drive, ride, or park on any of the cemetery grounds except roadways provided for those purposes. Bicycles and motorcycles are not permitted.
- Receptacles are provided and marked for visitors to discard and deposit trash. Your cooperation is respectfully requested to help keep the cemetery neat and clean.
- All persons are prohibited from picking any flowers, either wild or cultivated, breaking or injuring any tree, plant, or shrub.
- The Village of Newtown is not responsible for any accident which may occur on the cemetery property.
Donations/Selling Cemetery Plots
- Bequests and donations may be made to the Cemetery Fund through the Cemetery Sexton.

Burials
- Persons applying for a permit to bury a deceased person must be able to provide the following information:
- Name and address of the deceased
- Name and address of the party authorizing burial.
- Name of the lot owner and his/her relationship to the deceased.
- Cemetery deed or other proof of ownership.
- Section, lot and grave number.
- Name and address of the funeral director.
- Funeral arrangements must be coordinated with our Cemetery Sexton Ron Dickerson at 513.271.2009 (office) or 513.476.2511 (cell). The Village must be notified a minimum of 24 hours before internment.
- All internments must be placed in a concrete vault. The Village requests the use of top-seal vaults.
- Cremains (cremated remains) may be buried in one grave, or one grave may hold several containers of ashes. Cremains also may be buried in an occupied grave.
- Only contracted personnel, Village employees under the supervision of the Cemetery Sexton, are permitted to dig graves or perform related labor on the cemetery grounds.

- There shall be no burials on Sundays, holidays or weekends that contain a holiday or have a holiday the Friday prior to or Monday subsequent.
Foundations/Markers
- The cost of foundation is shown on the rate schedule and is subject to change. Payment must be made at the time the foundation is ordered.
- Foundations are installed by Village employees and are placed in line to conform to existing markers.
- Foundations for new graves are not poured until six months after burial to allow the ground to settle. Foundations for established graves are poured periodically, based on scheduling conditions.
- All grave markers must be commercially marketed.
- Vases or urns are permitted with permission from the Village. A foundation is required.
- The Village is not responsible for damage to monuments, markers, or stones in the cemetery caused by the ordinary care of the cemetery.
- Foundations are poured without charge for Veterans, whose grave stone or marker has been provided by the Federal Government. Foundation charge will be $25.00 per cubic foot ($50.00 minimum). This is subject to change.
Decorations
- No planting of flowers, shrubs, or any vegetation (except spring bulbs) is permitted on the grave.
- Flowers and other decorations placed on graves are periodically removed for grass mowing and other maintenance.
- Arrangements designed for attaching to markers are permissible, but are subject to removal when they detract from the general appearance of the cemetery.
- Boxes, shells, toys, and similar objects placed on graves or lots are inconsistent with the proper keeping of the grounds and are not permitted.
- Glass containers or fencing are not permitted.
- The Village does not assume responsibility for flowers or other decorations on a gravesite within the cemetery.
