The Village of Newtown, Ohio was founded in 1792. The original fort, Fort Mercer, was settled near the current Jones Fish Hatchery on Church Street. It was originally called Mercersburg, named after early settler Captain Aaron Mercer. The original fort was burned down during a skirmish with local Indians. When it was rebuilt, the residents called it New Town, later combined to be Newtown.

Newtown was originally part of Anderson Township. However, we became our own township in the 1960’s.
